-----------

1.  Crown Dance Studio; 2820 Dorr Ave; Merrifield, VA 22031 (METRO-ACCESSIBLE!)

This is an easy, 3 or 4 block walk from the Dunn Loring metro station. The station is at the intersection of Gallows Rd and Prosperity Ave. If you leave the station heading west on Prosperity, then make a left onto Merrilee Dr. and then a right onto Merrifield Ave. From there it's a left onto Dorr; the studio is on your right.

To get there by car from Route 495 (Washington Beltway), take the exit for 50 West and get onto Gallows Rd. (VA-650 N) heading toward Merrifield. Then make a left onto Lee Highway (US 29). (There is a Taco Bell, a Sonoco station, and a "Gas King" station at this intersection.) Then turn right onto Hilltop Rd, and then another quick right onto Dorr Ave. There is lots of parking around the building. Walk in the building's front door, go through a door on the main floor adn walk down the corridor. The studio is on the right side of the corridor.

2. The Madeira School

8328 Georgetown Pike; Mc Lean, VA

If you are coming from Vienna, Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, or points south in Virginia, get onto the Washington Beltway (Route 495) heading north towards Tyson's Corner/Mc Lean. You get off the Beltway at Georgetown Pike. Take that about 2 miles outside the beltway in the direction of Great Falls and a little before the school you will start to see a white, wooden fence around big pastures. Soon after that, you will come to a sign for the Madeira School on your right.

The school sign is small but on the left side of the road there is a street sign that says "Bellview Road." So when you see Bellview on your left, turn in to the school which is on your right.

After turning into the school, go 2/10 of a mile to the Gate House and tell the guard that you are there for the Salsa class. He'll let you pass and then go another 2/10 of a mile past a beautiful field and tennis courts on right and left. You will come to the gymnasium on your left with a parking area on the right. You can park there, or in the visitor's parking which is just past the gym and on the left. The student parking lot behind the visitor's parking can also be used. Walk into the "Hurd Gymnasium" and immediately past the entrance area, turn right. You'll see their beautiful dance studio with big windows overlooking the grounds. Note that occasionally the class is moved to the Chapel Auditorium Building due to a special event at the school. The guard at the Gate House when you come in would know if the class was moved FYI.

If you are coming from the Bethesda/Rockville/Silver Spring corridor, then get onto the Washington Beltway (Route 495) and head into Virginia (towards Tysons Corner). Just after the bridge at the MD/VA border, you will see the off ramp for exits 43 and 44 together. One of these exits is the George Washington Memorial Parkway and the other is Georgetown Pike. You follow exit 44 which is Georgetown Pike (also called Route 193). Take that about 2 miles outside the beltway in the direction of Great Falls until you come to the sign for Madeira School on your right. The school sign is small and easy to miss, but on the left-hand side of the street there is a prominent street sign that says "Bellview Road." So when you see Bellview, turn in to the school on your right! See the paragraph above for directions once you are on the school grounds.

FYI, About once or twice a year, the school has to bump this class to their Chapel Auditorium Building.  The man at the gate house as you enter will always know what building the class is in that day, so if you can check with him if you're uncertain.

3. The Avalon Studio

15 Mellor Ave.
Catonsville, MD

Get onto the Washington beltway (495) and take either the Baltimore Washington Parkway or Route 95 north. Get onto the Baltimore beltway (I695) going towards Towson. From I695, take exit 13, Frederick Rd., west towards Catonsville. Turn left onto Mellor Ave. at third light. Then turn left into 2nd parking lot entrance. The studio faces the parking lot--you can see it at the edge of the lot.

------------------------------------------------------------

4. Eleanor Pernia Dance Studio

10434 Baltimore Ave (which is Route 1); Beltsville, MD.

To get there from the beltway, get off at Route 1 (exit 25), but head north towards Laurel (instead of south towards College Park).

Go about three fourths of a mile on Route 1, passing the Department of Agriculture buildings on your left.

The studio is located on your left in a building behind a gas station which is either a BP Station or an Amoco. (I thought I saw it marked both ways--maybe it's changing hands.)

There is a service road just past the gas station as you head north. You turn left at that service road. (A small shopping center is on your right once you make that turn.)

Go up a small hill and there is a small parking lot on your left. Park there and go to the far end of the building which is the entrance to the dance studio.

5. Alliance Dance Institute

Landmark Mall
5801 Duke Street
Alexandria, Virginia 22304

(703) 354-8405 -- phone # for the Landmark Mall
(703)-354-6000 -- phone number for Alliance Dance Institute

Alliance Dance Institute is on the second floor of this mall.

By Car

From the north (Maryland suburbs or Baltimore):

1.Come down Route 295 all the way to the Washington beltway on the south side (just before the bridge into Virginia). Go over that bridge (the Woodrow Wilson). Note that it's actually part of the beltway.

As you get off the bridge, you are in Virginia. The first beltway stop in Virginia is Route 1. Pass that exit and the exit at Telegraph Rd. Get off at the Van Dorn exit going north (I think it's the very next Beltway exit). Follow Van Dorn (which is also called route 401) north until you come to the Landmark Mall on the left. Follow the signs for the mall.

2. Another option (and the one I use!) is to simply get onto the Washington Beltway (495) and take it till you get to Route 395. Then you can take 395 north and get off at the Duke Street exit (route 236). That puts you going right to the mall--you'll see it ahead on your left. Follow the signs for the mall--but be careful as it's a little tricky to actually get into the mall even though you can see it.  The signs take you up to the right, headed slightly away from the mall, and then around before you drive into the mall parking lot.

From Virginia, further north or west of Alexandria:
If you are driving from the other side of Virginia (further west like Fairfax), then you can just take the beltway around towards Route 395 (which is the next exit further west from Van Dorn). From 495, get off at 395 going north. From 395, take the Duke Street exit (route 236) which is right at the Landmark mall. Follow the signs for the mall.

If you are near Route 395:
Likewise, if you are anywhere near 395, north of Alexandria, you can take 395 south and get off at the Duke Street exit (route 236). That puts you at the mall. Follow the signs for the mall. Note option #2 above (in the "coming from the north" section) which has a little more detail on this route.

If you come from south of 495:
If you are near 95,south of the Washington beltway (495), then you can take 95 north which becomes 395 at the Washington beltway. Get off at the Duke Street exit---you are right at the mall. Follow the signs to the mall parking.

By metro

You can use the Van Dorn metro stop to get there, which is on the blue line. It's about 1.9 miles from that metro stop to the mall, a little long to walk. So they have buses that run from the metro stop and get you to the mall in just 10 minutes.

The AT5 bus and the 25B bus both stop at Landmark Mall and the Van Dorn metro stop. To find out the schedule of the buses and the exact pick up and drop off times, you can call the main office for "Metro" and they have someone who can look up the bus schedules and tell you when they run.

You can also go to metroopensdoors.com and type in the address where you are and where you are going and you can get all reasonable routes via metro and bus will pop up.

6.  Glen Echo Park
7300 MacArthur Boulevard; Glen Echo, MD
Parking lot is at: 5801 Oxford Rd; Glen Echo , MD 20812

By Car:
From the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495), take exit 40 on the outer loop or exit 41 east on the inner loop. Take Clara Barton/Cabin John Parkway to the MacArthur Boulevard/Glen Echo exit. Make a left onto MacArthur Boulevard . Cross Goldsboro Road and then make a left onto Oxford Road where you will see the Glen Echo parking lot.

From downtown Washington , take Massachusetts Avenue in the northwest direction, to its end at Goldsboro Road . Turn left and continue to MacArthur Boulevard . Turn right on MacArthur Boulevard and take an immediate left onto Oxford Road where you will see the Glen Echo parking lot.

By Public Transportation:
Take Montgomery County Ride-On bus #29 operating daily from the Friendship Heights and Bethesda metro stations on the Red Line.

7.  Paint Branch Church

3215 Powder Mill Rd; Adelphi, MD 20783.

The website for the church is www.pbuuc.org FYI.

From 95
To go there from I95, take exit 29B west on Powder Mill Road (MD 212) and go a minle and a half past 4 traffic lights to the church parking lot on the left. The sign for the church is small and easy to miss. They run a Montessori School at the church and the school sign is easier to spot--just keep your eyes peeled. It's maybe a quarter of a mile past Cherry Hill Road as you come down Powder Mill.   Once you arrive, there is a large parking lot. Walk to the church following the walkway. At the end of the walkway you face the church. Look to your left and there is another building. That is their Montessori School building, and that is where we'll work. Follow the walkway to that building---we're in a classroom down the corridor of the first (top) floor on the left.

From 495 either direction

a. If you are coming from the Washington Beltway, 495 on the east side, then get off at the Route 1 exit and turn right onto Cherry Hill Rd. Take it to Powder Mill and make a left. The church is a short distance down on your left. Walk to the church following the walkway. b. From the other direction on 495, you can get off the beltway at New Hampshire Ave (exit 28A) and go north. Turn right onto Powder Mill Rd very soon after getting off the beltway, and go a mile and then bear left at thenext light. Go up a hill and the church is on your right. The sign for the church is small and easy to miss. They run a Montessori School at the church and the school sign is easier to spot--just keep your eyes peeled. 8.   Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center on the University of Maryland Campus

Get to the College Park area, and drive down University Blvd (this intersects Route 1) which borders the University on one side. If you are coming from 495, the Washington Beltway, you can do this by getting off at Route 1 (Baltimore Blvd) and then turn right at University Blvd (193).  From there, turn into the University on Stadium Drive.  Coming from Greenbelt or the Route 1 direction, it will be a left onto Stadium Drive.  If you were coming down University Blvd. from the Langley Park direction, it's a right onto Stadium Drive.

After turning onto Stadium Drive, the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center is the first building on your right, just a little ways up the street. It's a huge building.

Word to the wise: It's really difficult to find this building if you enter the University from any other entrance, so do enter the University from Stadium Drive.

To park, drive past the performing arts building on Stadium Drive to the end of the block.  You will come to a "T intersection" (i.e. Stadium Drive comes to a dead end at this intersection). The lot that you are staring at straight ahead when you get to that intersection is one of the few on campus where visitors can park.  (I think it's call lot 1B?)  To enter the lot, turn right at the "T intersection" and then make a left into the lot where you see the sign that says "visitors' parking."
